Which AI app builder should you use?

There's no single best one. There's a best one for your kind of app.

Last checked: 17 October 2026. We recheck prices and tool facts every month.

The short answer

There isn't one best AI app builder. The tools come in two kinds: builders that host your app (Lovable, Base44, Bolt, v0, Replit) and coding agents that give you the code (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex). Most founders start on a builder, and many move to an agent or a developer later. Here's the one for your situation.

Your situation

What's the best AI app builder for your app?

It depends on the app you're building. Find your situation, and you have your tool.

Your situationUseWhyWatch out for
A web app or portal, first versionUseLovableWhyBuilds a running web app from a plain brief. Code syncs to GitHub. More people to hire who know it than for any other builder: 174 Upwork jobs name it (our count, 7–9 Oct 2026).Watch out forWeb apps only. Its built-in database has no one-click move. Bolt builds this kind of app too. In one published test, the same six-requirement brief, Bolt and Lovable both met all six (AI Alleyway, October 2026, one test). We lead with Lovable because more founders hire help for it: 174 Upwork jobs name Lovable and 15 name Bolt (our count, 7–9 Oct 2026).

Builders and coding agents

Builders or coding agents: what's the difference?

Builders host your app for you. Coding agents give you the code and leave the rest to you.

Buildersthey host your app

· Lovable, Base44, Bolt, v0, Replit
What they do for youTake a plain-language brief and return a running app, with login, database and hosting built in.
What you take onA bill that grows with use. A built-in database that may not move with you.

Coding agentsthey give you the code

· Claude Code, Cursor, Codex
What they do for youWrite code on your own computer. You get full control, and can build any kind of app, mobile included.
What you take onHosting, database and login, or asking the agent to set them up. Backups and security. Some setup.

Bubble stands apart. It's a visual builder you drag and click, with AI added. Your app lives on Bubble, and there's no code to take away.

Prototype, MVP or Ready to launch

How far will an AI app builder take you?

Far enough for a prototype. Often far enough for an MVP. For an app that's ready to launch, usually with a developer's help.

  1. 1Prototype:shows the idea. Screens and flows with sample data. A builder does this well, often in days.
  2. 2MVP:gets real people using it. Login, real data, one core workflow, basic security. A builder often gets you there, if you check the database rules.
  3. 3Ready to launch:holds real users after launch. Testing, admin tools, monitoring and the app store releases. With payments, several kinds of user or sensitive data, this usually takes a developer.

The numbers fit. In our Upwork data, most Lovable, Base44, Replit and Bubble jobs are founders who already built something and want it finished (16,363 jobs, 7–9 Oct 2026; posted budgets, one marketplace). And AI models write code that passes Veracode's security tests 56% of the time, unchanged on the year (Veracode, 2026).

From the people who build and fix them

Where do founders get stuck?

Behind the screen: login and roles, payments, database rules and the app store release.

  • Login and payments.A senior developer who audits apps built with Lovable, Claude Code, Cursor, Replit and Bolt: "The apps almost always work." The problems sit behind the login and payment flows. (Facebook group, Sep 2026, a seller)
  • Database rules."your supabase key is in your frontend. thats normal and its fine as long as RLS is set up on every table." RLS is the rule that decides who can see which data. (Reddit r/lovable, Oct 2026, a seller)
  • The app store release."Has anyone built a native iOS/Android app with Lovable? Would you recommend it over Rork or Base44?" (Facebook group, Oct 2026, a founder)
  • When it gets too big."at some point there were too many issues with it so they had to resort to devs" (Reddit r/softwareengineer, Sep 2026, a builder)

A real month

What does each one cost in a real month?

Paid plans start between $8 and $30 a month. The plan price is not the bill.

Rork's pricing page shows no plan prices on 17 October 2026. All prices from the vendors' own pages, checked 17 October 2026; they change often.

Why the price isn't the bill

Why is the plan price not the bill?

Because each tool bills a different way, and the bill grows with use.

Lovable counts credits, Bolt counts tokens, Replit bills by effort and Bubble meters server work, so the same plan price can mean very different months.

Most complaints are about the bill: in our sample of 1,550 Trustpilot reviews, 61% were 1 or 2 stars, and 62% of those were about cost (Onekode Market Trend Study 2025–26, our sample, Medium).

Day one

What should you do on day one?

Keep your code, your data and your accounts in your name.

  1. 1Keep your code on your own GitHub account.
  2. 2Use your own database where the tool lets you.
  3. 3Open every account in your name: domain, hosting, payments, email.
Mobile

Which ones reach the app stores?

Some make real phone apps, some wrap a web app, and some make web apps only.

LovableWeb apps only. Its phone app is for building, not for the app you makeWeb only

Claude Code, Codex and Cursor can build any kind of app, mobile included. You set up the store release yourself.

What a wrapper means. It shows your web app inside a phone app. A team that sells Base44 fixes says it can't yet take Apple or Google in-app payments (a seller's view).

Questions

Questions.

Which AI app builder is best for beginners?

For a web app or portal, most founders with no coding experience start on Lovable. It hosts your app, handles login and the database, and syncs your code to GitHub. If you need the app stores quickly, Base44 is simpler. Neither is right for every idea, so find your situation in the table above.

Which AI app builder can make an app for the App Store and Google Play?

Replit builds mobile apps with Expo and releases them to the App Store (Replit says). Base44 makes App Store and Google Play files, but wraps your web app. FlutterFlow and Rork are built for native apps (the companies say). Lovable and v0 make web apps only. Checked 17 October 2026.

Can an AI app builder build a complex app?

Not always on its own. A builder can make a complex-looking app, but the problems tend to sit behind login, payments and database rules, and founders report fixes breaking other parts as the app grows. Many then move to Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, usually with a developer, because those give you the code.

Can AI actually build my whole app?

Sometimes, if it's a prototype or a simple first version. Founders with no coding experience build working apps in days. A full app with payments, several kinds of user or sensitive data usually needs a developer for the last stretch. AI models write code that passes security tests 56% of the time (Veracode, 2026).

When will I need a developer?

When real people's data, payments, several kinds of user or the app stores come in. Other signs: each change uses many credits and fixes break other parts, or you can't move your database. In our Upwork data, most Lovable, Base44, Replit and Bubble jobs are founders asking for a built app to be finished.

What happens if I pick the wrong one?

You lose some time, not the idea. On most builders you can take your code to GitHub. The built-in database is the harder part, and Bubble has no code export. Put your code on your own GitHub and open accounts in your name on day one, and a later move gets much easier.
