Builder or coding agent: which should you use?

The Onekode team·

Lovable and Replit host your app, with login and a database. Claude Code and Cursor give you the code, and you take on the hosting, the backups and the security. A common route is to start on a builder, sync it to GitHub, then bring in an agent.

Last checked: 18 October 2026. We recheck prices and tool facts every month.

Two kinds of tool

How are Lovable and Replit different from Claude Code and Cursor?

Lovable and Replit are builders: they return a running app. Claude Code and Cursor are coding agents: they write code on your computer, and the rest is yours.

One name, two products. "Claude" alone is Anthropic's chat assistant. Claude Code is the coding agent this page means. See the questions below.

Before you leave a builder

What do you take on when you use Claude Code or Cursor?

Everything a builder did quietly in the background. The agent can help you set it up, but you own the result.

  • Hosting. Neither tool hosts your app. You pick a place to run it.
  • Database and login. Claude Code has no built-in hosting, database or login. You connect services for each, or ask the agent to.
  • Backups. Nobody makes them for you.
  • Security. Who can see which data is your job to check.
  • Setup and the terminal. You work in a terminal or an editor, and learn a little Git.

"I trusted AI with 8-9 months of my work. This week, that trust became a very expensive lesson."

Your situation

Which one is right for your app?

A builder if you want a hosted first version fast. An agent if you want the code and control.

  • Stay on Lovable if you're building a web app or portal, you want login and a database in one place, and the credits still fit your month.
  • Stay on Replit if you want to build a web or mobile app (Replit builds mobile apps with Expo, Replit says), and you never want to touch a terminal.
  • Add Claude Code or Cursor if you have a first version and have hit the builder's ceiling, you want the code on your own computer, or the credit bill has become the problem. You'll want a developer, or time to learn Git.

Both kinds have a real strength. Builders get you to a first version in days and host it for you. Agents give you control of all the code and let you build any kind of app. Neither is Onekode's tool, and we sell neither.

A real month

How does each one bill?

Differently on every tool. The plan price is where the bill starts, not where it ends.

ToolEntry paid plan, 17 Oct 2026How it bills
LovablePro $25 a month ($21 billed annually)Credits per message
ReplitCore $20 a month ($18 billed annually)By effort, per checkpoint
Claude CodeClaude Pro $20 a month, which it needs. Max from $100Runs on a Claude plan with time limits: 5-hour windows plus weekly caps (Anthropic). Weekly limits were raised 25% from 14 Sep 2026
CursorPlus $8 a month. Premium $30From usage pools, by model

Lovable and Replit bill from use, and Cursor bills from its usage pools.

Founders feel the difference both ways:

"spent over $300 in replit credits building it. I've now transferred the app to being built on my local computer using Claude Code"

(someone building an app, Reddit r/replit, Apr 2026)

"Claude Code CLI burns ~1-3% of your quota immediately on startup"

(someone building an app, Reddit r/ClaudeCode, Jan 2026)

From builder to agent

Can you start on a builder and move to an agent later?

Yes. A common route in 2026 is: build on the builder, sync the code to GitHub, then open it in Claude Code or Cursor.

The database is the hard part. In Lovable's own docs, there is no one-click move from Lovable Cloud to your own Supabase, and the database export leaves out stored files, Edge Function code and secrets (Lovable docs, checked 17 October 2026).

Founders go both ways:

"I moved most of my workflow over to Claude Code and Codex, then completely forgot to cancel Lovable."

(someone building an app, Reddit r/vibecoding, May 2026)

"came back to lovable from claude code last week."

(someone building an app, Reddit r/lovable, May 2026)

What changed

What changed at Cursor?

How it bills first: from usage pools, with Plus at $8 a month (17 Oct 2026). Then its owner changed: SpaceX bought Cursor, and the deal closed in August 2026.

Some users have noticed since. One says "they are biasing the auto mode to choose grok for all tasks" (someone building an app, Reddit r/cursor, Sep 2026). Another wrote "I canceled Cursor today after using it for many months." (someone building an app, Reddit r/cursor, Sep 2026).

Two posts are not a verdict, and we have no count of how many users feel this way. If Cursor's pools suit your month, nothing here says to leave.

From our data

What does the hiring market say?

Founders who hire help name the coding agents most.

  • Claude Code is named in 318 Upwork jobs, Cursor in 197, Lovable in 174 and Replit in 63, out of 16,363 jobs. Collected 7–9 Oct 2026. Posted budgets, not prices paid. One marketplace, direction only.
  • Founder talk. Of founder posts that name a tool, Claude Code's share rose from 5% in Q4 2025 to 19% in Q3 2026. Onekode Market Trend Study 2025–26, Reddit, X and LinkedIn, October 2025 to October 2026. Our sample, direction only (Medium).

Questions

Questions.

Is Claude Code better than Replit or Lovable for a beginner?

Not usually. Replit and Lovable host your app and handle login and the database, so a beginner gets a running first version in days. Claude Code gives you the code and leaves hosting, backups and security to you. It suits founders who already have a first version, or who work with a developer.

What do you take on when you use Claude Code or Cursor instead of a builder?

Hosting, database and login (Claude Code has none built in), backups, security, and some setup in a terminal or an editor. The agent can help with each, but you own the result. A builder does most of this for you quietly, which is its main strength and the reason its bill grows.

Which costs less in a real month?

It depends on how you work. On 17 Oct 2026 the entry plans were Cursor Plus $8, Replit Core $20, Claude Pro $20 (which Claude Code needs) and Lovable Pro $25. Claude Code runs on a Claude plan with time limits: 5-hour windows plus weekly caps (Anthropic). Lovable bills by credits, Replit by effort and Cursor from usage pools.

Can I start on Lovable or Replit and move to Claude Code or Cursor later?

Yes, and it's a common route in 2026: sync your code to GitHub, then open it in the agent. The database is the hard part. On Lovable Cloud there's no one-click move to your own Supabase, and the export leaves out stored files, Edge Function code and secrets (Lovable docs).

Is Cursor still worth it after the SpaceX deal?

That depends on how you use it. SpaceX bought Cursor, and the deal closed in August 2026. Plus is $8 a month, billed from usage pools (17 Oct 2026). Some users say auto mode now favours Grok, and some have cancelled (Reddit, Sep 2026). We have no count, so check that the pools suit your month.

Do I need to learn to code to use Claude Code?

You don't need to write code, but you do need to be comfortable with a terminal, Git and setting up hosting, or to ask the agent to do those for you. It's easier with a developer nearby. If that sounds like too much, a builder keeps more of it out of your way.

Is Claude the same as Claude Code?

No. Claude is Anthropic's chat assistant. Claude Code is its coding agent, which reads your files, writes code and runs commands from plain English. Both run on a Claude plan: Claude Code needs a paid one, from Claude Pro at $20 a month (17 Oct 2026). Searches for "lovable vs claude" usually mean Claude Code.
